To recognize and honor the best designs in the Jewelry industry, various Gems & Jewelry Awards take place across the globe. After the UK Jewellery Awards 2015 that took place in June this year, here are some of the upcoming prominent ones.
2016 GEM Awards
Conducted by The Jewelers of America, GEM Awards are hailed as the ‘Academy Awards’ of the jewelry industry and recognizes individuals and companies who raise the visibility and status of fine jewelry and watches. The 13th edition of the annual awards will take place on 8th January 2016 in New York. The Jury recently announced the 3 nominees of the GEM Award for Jewelry Design:
- Caroline Scheufele – Co-President and Artistic Director of Chopard; Introduced “Happy Diamonds” jewellery collection in 1985
- Sevan Bicakci – Unveiling his 1st collection in March 2002, he has pioneered techniques including metal-based painting, engraving, calligraphy, intaglio carving (reverse gemstone carving) and micro-mosaic setting.
- Temple St. Clair – Founded her company 30 years ago in Florence, Italy; Barneys New York inaugurated their fine jewelry department with her first collection in 1986
Nominees for Media Excellence, Watch Design and Lifetime Achievement are yet to be announced.
A’ Design Award 2016
The international juried Design Award & Competition is held across 110 categories and is calling for nominations. ‘Jewelry, Eyewear and Watch Design’ is the category for the Gems & Jewelry sector and is open for entries by Jewelers, Jewelry Designers et al from across the world, with eligible nominations of designs that were created within the last 10 years.
The 2-phase competition starts with entries getting a preliminary score for the project, and those who pass the threshold can proceed further with nominations. Deadline for entry to the awards is 30th September 2015, results of which will be announced on 15th April 2016. Apart from the highly coveted A’ Design Prize, the winners also get access to PR, marketing and publicity tools.
Jewellery Design Awards 2015
Hosted by Dubai International Jewellery Week (DIJW), the 7th edition of Jewellery Design Awards (JDA) 2015 will take place during DIJW on 9-12 December 2015
Hong Kong Jewellery Design Competition
Organized by Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC), the 17th edition of The Hong Kong Jewellery Design Competition will be held during Hong Kong International Jewellery Show 2016. Deadline for applications to the competition recently ended on 14th September.
International Jewellery Design Excellence Award 2017
Again, organized by HKTDC, applications to the International Jewellery Design Excellence (IJDE) Award 2017, will be open till 20th September 2016. More information of this will be available in 2016.
Emerging Designer Awards
Organized by Centurion Jewelry, the 2016 Emerging Designer Awards is open for entries to designers by 30th September 2015.
Saul Bell Design Award
Presented by Rio Grande, the 2016 Saul Bell Design Award, now in its 16th year, will have 7 categories. A category of ‘Emerging Jewelry Artist’ is open for designers who are 21 years or younger. Last date for entry to the awards is 23rd October 2015.
Similarly, several such jewelry design competitions provide opportunities for both established and emerging jewelry designers and artists to get their work recognized and increase visibility.
